Quoting from the Poodle Club of America, the discriminating buyer should be aware that, "Responsible Poodle Breeders do not promote the sale of POCKET or TEACUP POODLES or ROYAL STANDARD POODLES or DESIGNER CROSS BREEDS. This is a marketing ploy to sell the pups for increased prices! If you are interested in a small toy poodle or a large standard poodle just ask for that! If you want a Cross Breed [yorkipoo, cockapoo, shitzpoo, pompoo, labradoodle], go to your local shelter." PCA, 2005.
| Cross Breeds are known to present the worst traits of both breeds. Intentional crossbreeding is an almost certain guarantee for problems, according to DVM Joanne Reichertz: "When you breed a litter of purebred dogs you get predictable puppies. With crossbred puppies you do not. People backcrossing...cannot predict the looks, coat and personalities of the resulting offsping,...they lose the health advantage which may have been gained through heterosis....[Mixed breeds present] the health problems of both breeds," PR, 2004. |
| Parti poodles: Poodles of mixed colors are not currently recognized by the AKC as registerable for the Conformation Show ring. The mixed colored coat is considered a breeding FAULT, and a dog with such coloring is disqualified from show. Anyone who tries to tell you different either is not educated in the breed standard or is lying to you. |
| TeaCups: West Country's select poodles are especially small and petite and are considered by other breeders to be "TeaCups." However, the AKC breed standard states that any poodle 10 inches or shorter, from shoulder to floor, is a Toy. Therefore, there really is no such thing as a "TeaCup Toy." |
Please do not purchase a puppy according to weight. Breeders wishing to misrepresent puppies will generally try to get you to focus upon weight. The only true indicator of size is the height, as so stated by both the American Kennel Club and the Poodle Club of America.
